Pick Up Your Mat and Walk—Part 2: The Miracle

And how Often do we fail to recognize God's Miracles in our lives?

Pick Up Your Mat and Walk – Part 2: The Miracle

The Missed Miracle

As we learned in Part 1 of this series, Jesus healed the man at the pool of Bethesda on the Sabbath. In biblical times, the Sabbath was sacred to the Jewish leaders, and it was considered sinful to do any kind of work—including healing the sick or even carrying a mat.

When the religious leaders saw the man walking with his mat, they didn’t celebrate his healing. Instead, they scolded him: “It’s forbidden to carry your mat on the Sabbath.”

The man replied: “The man who made me well told me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’”
They asked him, “Who is this man?”
But he couldn’t answer—he had no idea who Jesus was.

How often do we fail to recognize the Hand of God?

Let This Sink In — #1:
He had just encountered the Savior of the world.
He had been healed from a 38-year-long condition.
He had been physically set free.

And yet...
He didn’t even recognize Jesus—
the very Hand of God at work in his life.

The man received a miracle —but missed the Messiah
Let This Sink In — #2:

The Pharisees had just witnessed something miraculous.
A man who had been paralyzed for 38 years was now walking.
He was healed.
He was rejoicing.
He was carrying the very mat that once defined his suffering.

And yet...
They ignored the miracle.
They overlooked the healing.
They dismissed the joy.

Why?
Because they were more concerned with their man-made rules than the heart of God.
They were more focused on preserving their own authority than honoring the authority of Christ to heal.

They were so fixated on themselves—their status, their control, their system—
that they completely missed Jesus standing right in front of them.

The pharisees witnessed a miracle—and chose to ignor the very hand of God at work

How often do we miss the hand of God and His every day miracles in our lives?

1. How often do we overlook the healing God has already done in our lives—because we’re still focused on the healing we’re still waiting for?

2. How often has He saved us from what we didn’t even know was about to harm us—
and we just kept going as if nothing happened?

3. How often have we received the very love we prayed for—only to take it for granted once it's finally in our hands?

4. How often do we pray for peace in the storm—and then fail to notice the calm that came when we stopped to breathe?

5. How many times has God protected our children, our family, our future—but we got so caught up in worry that we forgot to say thank You?

6. How often have we been comforted in the middle of grief, strengthened when we had nothing left to give, provided for when the bank account said otherwise—
and still doubted if God was really near?

7. How many divine delays, closed doors, or redirections have spared us—
but we saw them as setbacks instead of saving grace?

8. How often do we ask God for clarity or direction—
and then ignore His whisper because we were expecting a louder voice?

But here's where it gets Personal, where the miracles that hit home...

My son had brain surgery last October… and God provided every step of the way.
He gave me strength when I should’ve been shaken.
He gave me confidence to walk through it all.
And He healed my son without a hitch.

Last July, my friend’s husband had quadruple bypass surgery for a defective heart.
He nearly died… but God spared his life.
He brought him back. He restored what was breaking down.

A husband who once lashed out in anger meets Jesus, repents, and is transformed.
He softens. He listens. He stops yelling.
He loves like Christ.

A Brother and sister who had been estranged for years are reconciled in Christ.
Through His grace, they forgive. They reconcile.
What was broken is healed—not just between them, but within them.

These are miracles.
Not flashy. Not loud.

But they are the fingerprints of God in motion—healing, restoring, renewing.
Miracles aren't always loud.

"Sometimes they’re wrapped in the mundane, the quiet, the ordinary.
And if we’re not paying attention, we’ll walk right past what God is doing."

And even then—
He’s still near.
He’s still speaking.
He’s still healing.
He’s still loving.

And He’s still saying:
“Believe. Pick up your mat. And follow Me.”

The Greatest Missed Miracle of all...

Every day, we miss the miracle of God’s goodness in the details of our lives—
in the peace that holds us,
in the protection we didn’t even see coming,
in the restoration unfolding in the lives of those around us.

But here is one of the greatest missed miracles:

If you have come to Christ and been saved—
it wasn’t by chance.
It wasn’t random.
It wasn’t because you finally “figured it out.”

It was because the Father first drew you.

“No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them…”— John 6:44 (NIV)

Out of billions of people across thousands of years—
God saw your heart.
He knew your name.

He sent His Spirit to nudge you, stir you, and call you.And you—by His grace—responded.
You followed the invitation all the way to the cross.
And you were saved.
Let This Sink In — #3: The God of the universe moved in your life so personally, so specifically—because your soul matters to Him. That’s not just a moment!
That God sees your heart.
That He knows your name.
That He drew you to Himself so you could be saved…
This isn’t ordinary.
This is the greatest miracle in your life today.
That out of billions, He chose you.
And you responded.
Let that truth settle deep.

Reflection Questions

  1. What miracles has God already done in your life that you may be overlooking today?
  2. Have you received healing or protection but moved on without truly thanking God?
  3. Are you so focused on what hasn’t happened yet that you’ve missed what God is already doing?
  4. What relationships, provisions, or inner transformations might be everyday miracles you’ve taken for granted?
  5. When was the last time you paused to reflect on the miracle of your salvation?

A Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the miracles You’ve worked in my life—both the ones I’ve seen and the ones I’ve missed.
Forgive me for the times I’ve overlooked Your hand, dismissed Your healing, or taken Your goodness for granted.
Help me to see the fingerprints of Your grace in the everyday.
Open my eyes to Your presence in the quiet.
Give me a heart that recognizes Your voice, Your provision, and Your love—even when it comes in unexpected ways.
Lord, help me to walk forward in faith—
to pick up my mat, leave behind what once held me down, and follow You with courage.
Let my life be a living testimony to Your mercy, Your power, and Your unfailing love.
I trust You.
I choose You.
I will follow You.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
